Destiny 2’s player base has plummeted to unprecedented lows, sparking widespread concern among its dedicated community. The game recently recorded its lowest-ever concurrent player count on Steam, dipping below 6,900 users during off-peak periods. This troubling milestone represents a more than 65% decline in average monthly players since July 2025, falling even beneath the notorious player drop experienced during 2018’s Curse of Osiris expansion.
Currently, the Festival of the Lost event offers players new weapons, armor sets, and an updated Haunted Altars activity. Despite these additions, the content appears insufficient to reverse the declining engagement trend. What truly troubles veteran players isn’t just the dwindling numbers but Bungie’s prolonged silence regarding the game’s future direction.
Nearly two months have passed since Bungie’s September 9 Renegades livestream, where the studio promised a detailed roadmap would arrive “in the next few weeks.” The continued absence of this crucial communication has left the community questioning the developer’s leadership and strategic vision.
On Reddit, these frustrations recently erupted in a highly-upvoted post titled “Lack of Roadmap is Making Bungie Look Leaderless.” The discussion highlighted how Bungie’s current communication approach contrasts sharply with previous management styles. While former game directors like Joe Blackburn and Luke Smith maintained regular community dialogue, current director Tyson Greene has remained largely out of public view despite the game’s challenges.
The Reddit thread featured numerous concerned voices questioning whether any roadmap could effectively address the game’s deeper issues. One commenter speculated, “Even if we get a roadmap, will it be a ‘good’ roadmap that sets this franchise forward? I think part of the reason they haven’t released it is that they don’t really have much to offer beyond what was already in their annual calendar.”
Another user suggested that Bungie’s ambitious plans for expanding the Portal feature might have been derailed by the disappointing reception to Edge of Fate. They noted, “They can’t just write it off and throw it away; they’re in too deep. Unfortunately, salvaging this mess is no easier.”
Bungie’s communications team has offered limited updates throughout this period. Principal communications manager Dylan Gafner initially promised the roadmap in early September, followed by an October 1 statement that the team was “aligning on plans and timelines.” By October 14, he apologized for the delay while confirming there was still “no ETA” for the roadmap’s release.
Many remaining players hope the eventual roadmap will provide reassurance about Destiny 2’s long-term future. However, expectations should be tempered by Gafner’s previous description of it as the “road to Renegades,” suggesting its focus might be limited to the upcoming expansion rather than broader future content.
The Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion, featuring new abilities, a social hub, and Lawless Frontiers activity, remains scheduled for December 2, 2025. Community-compiled projections based on known information suggest several subsequent content releases, including Shadow & Order in March 2026, Shattered Cycle in summer 2026, and The Alchemist in winter 2026.
