Microsoft has rolled out a new optional preview update for Windows 11, introducing the Administrator Protection security feature and a redesigned Start Menu. This update, labeled KB5067036, is part of Microsoft’s monthly non-security preview releases, allowing users to test upcoming features and fixes before they become part of the mandatory Patch Tuesday updates.

You can install this update by navigating to Settings, selecting Windows Update, and clicking “Check for Updates.” Since it is optional, you will need to confirm installation by choosing “Download and install,” unless you have enabled automatic updates. Alternatively, the update can be downloaded manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Once installed, the update upgrades Windows 11 24H2 to build 26100.5074 and Windows 11 25H2 to 26100.7019. It includes a range of fixes, such as resolving problems with the Media Creation Tool and HTTP/2 connections to localhost web services.

A standout addition is the redesigned Start Menu, which now offers a more responsive layout, scrollable “All” section, and new category and grid views to help users locate apps more efficiently. Another major highlight is the gradual rollout of Administrator Protection, a security enhancement that requires users to verify their identity via Windows Hello before performing actions needing administrative rights. This helps prevent accidental system changes and blocks malware from making unauthorized modifications.

The following fixes are now available to all Windows 11 users: Authentication: Resolved an ACCESS_DENIED error when changing passwords remotely and fixed Kerberos KDC service issues affecting domain controllers.

Several features are being rolled out gradually after installing the update:

  • Start Menu: The updated layout includes a scrollable “All” section, category and grid views, and a responsive design that adjusts to screen size. It also integrates Phone Link for Android and iOS devices.
  • Additional fixes address issues in display and graphics, input devices, Narrator, Open and Save dialogs, Remote Credential Guard, sign-in performance, Task Manager, and Windows Update errors.

Microsoft has stated that there are currently no known issues with this update. Full release notes are available in the official support bulletin.
