The Halloween event in Borderlands 4 has sparked significant backlash from the gaming community, with many players expressing deep disappointment over its lack of content and creativity. Titled “Horrors of Kairos,” this limited-time seasonal offering launched on October 23 and runs through November 6, but instead of delivering a festive in-game celebration, it has been widely criticized as a minimal update that fails to meet expectations.
During the event, players encounter a slight alteration to existing world boss mechanics. Upon entering a boss’s combat zone, the sky shifts to an orange hue, and defeating the enemy provides a chance to obtain one of two new legendary weapons, the Skully grenade or the Murmur assault rifle. Once the encounter concludes, the sky reverts to normal. Beyond these weapon drops, players can also claim a few Halloween-themed cosmetic skins using a Shift code. That essentially sums up the entire event.
Many have pointed out that the experience feels underwhelming, especially since world bosses spawn randomly, requiring players to spend considerable time roaming the open world in hopes of triggering an encounter. Even when a boss appears, well-equipped players can often finish the fight in under a minute. The contrast with previous Borderlands Halloween events, such as the one in Borderlands 3, which introduced a new character, a dedicated map, and a unique boss, makes the current offering seem particularly lackluster.
Content creators and fans have not held back in voicing their frustration. Popular Borderlands YouTuber Joltzdude139 released a video titled “The Horrors Of Kairos Halloween Event Sucks In Borderlands 4,” where he stated, “As a biiiiig Borderlands fan, I am absolutely disappointed.” His sentiment is echoed across platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube, where players are calling the event a missed opportunity.
Although Gearbox marketed the Halloween update as a “mini-event,” the community’s reaction suggests it falls short of even that modest label. Many are now anticipating a lengthy public response from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who has a history of addressing controversies via social media. For now, the “Horrors of Kairos” serves as a stark reminder of how thin seasonal content can alienate a dedicated player base.
