A new firmware update for the PlayStation 5 is now available, bringing several useful features and under-the-hood improvements to the console. This latest system software release, version 25.07-12.20.00, introduces the ability for users to directly check the serial numbers of both their PS5 console and any connected DualSense wireless controllers. This enhancement simplifies the process for warranty claims, support requests, or when registering devices.

Beyond this new functionality, the update delivers a suite of refinements. Stability has been specifically improved for the high-end DualSense Edge wireless controller through a device software refresh. On-screen messages and general usability have been enhanced across certain system screens, creating a more intuitive user experience. Furthermore, the overall performance and stability of the system software have received a general polish.

To locate your console’s serial number, navigate to Settings, then select System, followed by System Software. From there, choose Console Information where you will find the Serial Number listed. For a connected DualSense controller, the path is Settings, then Accessories, General, and Advanced Settings, where you can select View Serial Number.

This marks the second system update released in October, following a minor stability patch issued at the beginning of the month. The year 2025 has seen relatively few major overhauls for the PS5, with the most significant changes being the reintroduction of classic PlayStation user interface themes and substantial revisions to activity settings, nestled among various smaller incremental updates.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation’s launch in the US and Europe, Sony is celebrating with new merchandise. Fans can pre-order special edition sneakers that pay homage to the brand, which come packaged in limited-edition boxes inspired by the iconic ’90s console design. For those interested in gaming history, a deluxe book titled “PlayStation: The First 30 Years,” which chronicles the creation of the original console, is also available for pre-order.

On the gaming side, Sony recently launched one of its major first-party exclusives for the year, Ghost of Yotei. Additionally, the PS Plus Game Catalog has been refreshed with a selection of new titles perfect for the season.
