Previously unseen images from Rare’s cancelled project Everwild have appeared online, shared through the portfolio of a former artist involved with the game. This provides a rare glimpse into what might have been for the title, which was first revealed to the public in 2019.

The initial announcement showcased a vibrant, animated trailer filled with imaginative fantasy creatures and lush environments, instantly capturing attention with its unique art direction. A follow-up trailer in 2020 introduced the concept of player characters, known as Eternals, calming these unusual beings. Despite the intriguing premise, the core gameplay mechanics remained somewhat mysterious. Earlier this year, Microsoft’s decision to cancel the project was confirmed, a move that coincided with broader company layoffs.

Recently published screenshots, reportedly from a build of the game close to its cancellation, display various user interface elements. The inventory menu is visible, allowing players to navigate through categories labeled Favourites, Figments, Tools, Mosaics, Seeds, and Plants. The Figments category appears to contain small, plant-like creatures. Accompanying the menu is an in-game scene showing a character near a stone circle. While the menu options hint at potential farming or base-building mechanics, it is uncertain if this was a central part of the experience or a secondary feature.

Additional images include a list of graphical settings and a few foggy, atmospheric shots that highlight the game’s distinctive visual style. Although these screenshots offer limited information, they represent the only look at the game beyond the officially released trailers.

In a statement from February, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had commented on the development progress at Rare. He expressed satisfaction with the extended time given to the development teams, describing it as a long-held ambition to allow for such creative freedom. Unfortunately, that period of development for Everwild ultimately came to a close. The future projects for the studio, aside from the ongoing support for Sea of Thieves, are now unknown. This leak follows a similar incident involving assets from the also-cancelled Perfect Dark reboot.
