The much-loved Final Fantasy fighting spin-off Dissidia is gearing up for a comeback, though this revival appears exclusively tailored for mobile platforms. Square Enix has generated excitement by scheduling an announcement stream for October 14th, confirming the game will launch on both iOS and Android under the development name Team Boss Battle. A dedicated website is already live, showcasing scenic Tokyo backdrops alongside recognizable silhouettes of franchise favorites like Lightning, Rinoa, Cloud, and Zidane.

Details remain scarce at this stage, and the decision to restrict the release to smartphones may disappoint enthusiasts hoping for a console or PC version. The original Dissidia Final Fantasy debuted on Sony’s PSP in 2008, celebrating the series’ 20th anniversary with dynamic 3D combat that brought heroes and villains from across the franchise together. A sequel followed in 2011, and the series later expanded with Dissidia Final Fantasy NT for arcades, PlayStation 4, and PC. More recently, Square Enix introduced the mobile title Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia in 2017.

Opera Omnia was discontinued in February of last year, joining a growing list of mobile games Square Enix has shuttered over recent years, among them Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier and Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius. Given this pattern, some fans are already apprehensive that the new Dissidia installment could adopt a gacha-centric model with a potentially short operational lifespan.

Despite these concerns, Square Enix continues to prioritize mobile game development. Just last month, the company unveiled Dragon Quest Smash/Grow for handheld devices, aligning with renewed momentum for that iconic RPG series.
