Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 stands as the finest video game he has ever created. During a recent exclusive discussion at LA Comic Con, the celebrated writer behind iconic series like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption was asked which of his projects he considers the most outstanding. Without hesitation, Houser pointed to the 2018 western epic, praising its masterful execution of open-world storytelling and its powerful emotional impact.

Released to widespread critical acclaim, Red Dead Redemption 2 is frequently hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made. It earned a perfect 10/10 score from IGN, which described it as a meticulously crafted tribute to the outlaw era. The title has achieved staggering commercial success, selling an incredible 77 million copies over the past seven years.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 holds the top spot, Houser also expressed deep admiration for other landmark titles from his career. He highlighted Grand Theft Auto IV for its fundamental evolution in narrative techniques and praised the middle section of Grand Theft Auto V for its remarkably smooth integration of three distinct protagonists. He also mentioned the conclusion of the original Red Dead Redemption as another personal favorite moment.

The conversation also touched upon the long-requested sequel, Bully 2. Houser explained that the project never materialized primarily due to bandwidth limitations within the small, core creative teams at Rockstar, which prevented them from pursuing every desired idea.

Since departing from Rockstar Games in 2020, Dan Houser has established his own company, Absurd Ventures. His upcoming crime fiction comic series, American Caper, is scheduled for release in November 2025. Although specific game projects from Absurd Ventures remain under wraps, the company expanded last year with the formation of a new studio, Absurd Marin, staffed by a team of around twenty developers formerly of Ascendant Studios.
