Classic fantasy shooters Heretic and Hexen have received a major modern overhaul with the surprise release of the Heretic & Hexen Enhanced Bundle during QuakeCon. Developed by id Software and Nightdive Studios, this comprehensive package breathes new life into the beloved 90s-era games while preserving their nostalgic charm.
The bundle includes all three original titles, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and the Deathkings of the Dark Citadel expansion, alongside two brand-new episodes crafted by the developers. Titled Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, these additions expand the experience with fresh content, bringing the total to 117 campaign maps and 120 multiplayer arenas.
Players can expect 4K resolution support, widescreen compatibility, and silky-smooth 120fps gameplay, along with modern controller integration. A game balance toggle lets fans switch between the original mechanics and refined adjustments, while accessibility features like text-to-speech, improved readability, and visual customization ensure a more inclusive experience. The package also includes a digital vault packed with concept art and behind-the-scenes assets.
For audiophiles, the enhanced soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult offers a fresh take on the iconic music, though purists can still opt for the original tracks. Multiplayer enthusiasts aren’t left out either, local and online co-op and versus modes are fully supported, alongside built-in mod functionality for endless replayability.
The bundle is available now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch for $15. Best of all, existing owners of the classic versions on platforms like Steam or GOG will receive a free upgrade to the enhanced edition while retaining access to the originals.
Earlier hints from GOG, which temporarily delisted the games before the announcement, had already sparked speculation among fans. Now, with the official release, retro FPS enthusiasts have plenty of reasons to revisit, or discover, these dark fantasy classics in their most polished form yet.
