Techland is celebrating Dying Light’s 10th anniversary with a free visual and audio upgrade for the original game, though Nintendo Switch owners won’t be part of the festivities. The update, called Dying Light: Retouched, rolls out this Thursday, bringing enhanced textures, lighting, and physics-based rendering to the 2015 zombie survival title.
The studio credits its in-house engine for making these improvements possible. By applying newer techniques to older assets, developers managed to breathe fresh life into the game without a full remaster. Players on high-end systems will notice sharper shadows, better texture resolution, and extended draw distances, while the soundtrack gets a remastered treatment with additional ambient tracks. Combat audio has also been fine-tuned for more visceral feedback.
Despite the upgrades, Techland clarifies this isn’t a complete overhaul, changes will vary depending on platform capabilities. Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch owners are left out entirely, with Techland confirming the update won’t reach the 2021 port or the rumored Switch 2. Instead, the team is focusing on Dying Light: The Beast, an 18-hour standalone expansion arriving in August for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Beyond that, the studio has teased multiple unannounced projects, including board games, webcomics, and merchandise, hinting at a broader expansion for the franchise. For now, fans can revisit the revamped original, just not on Nintendo’s handheld.
