Star Wars Battlefront 2 has shattered its all-time player record on Steam, drawing tens of thousands of concurrent users to the iconic shooter years after its initial release. The game reached an unprecedented peak of 35,892 simultaneous players on June 23, according to tracking data from SteamDB. This surge coincides with a steep discount, currently priced at just $4, propelling it into Steam’s top-selling titles. While the game remains popular on consoles, cross-platform play still isn’t an option for fans across PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
The resurgence didn’t happen overnight. Player counts began climbing steadily in early May, jumping from an average of 1,000–1,500 daily users in April to over 5,000. By late May, the game had already broken its previous Steam record with nearly 19,000 concurrent players before dipping again. However, the latest spike has far surpassed those numbers, suggesting a renewed wave of enthusiasm.
Speculation points to the finale of Andor Season 2 on Disney+ as a potential catalyst. The series delves into the Rebel Alliance’s origins, featuring key locations like Yavin 4, a fan-favorite map in Battlefront 2. The overlap has reignited discussions about the game’s immersive tie-ins to the broader Star Wars universe. Actor Muhannad Ben Amor, who appeared in Andor, even joined fans in urging EA to greenlight Battlefront 3.
Unfortunately, hopes for a sequel remain dim. A former DICE developer revealed reassembling the original team would be difficult, as key members have moved on to other projects. Licensing hurdles reportedly led EA to shelve plans for Battlefront 3 despite the franchise’s massive sales, over 33 million copies combined for the modern entries. Instead, DICE and other EA studios are focused on Battlefield 6.
For now, Star Wars fans have another title to anticipate: Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars. Developed by veterans of the XCOM series, it’s slated for a 2026 release. Until then, Battlefront 2’s unexpected revival proves the game still has plenty of life left in it.
