The upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will not feature the original Metal Gear Online component from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Konami officially confirmed this detail on its website, noting the omission alongside other information about the ports. While the collection brings MGS4 to modern platforms, the bundled multiplayer experience that launched with the game in 2008 will remain a relic of the past.
This specific version of Metal Gear Online debuted alongside MGS4 on the PlayStation 3, offering various modes that incorporated elements from the single-player campaign. It operated for several years, receiving expansions before Konami ultimately discontinued the servers in 2012. Reviving this online service for the new collection appears to be a logistical hurdle the publisher is not prepared to overcome.
However, the collection will not be entirely devoid of online play. Konami has confirmed that Peace Walker will support its original online multiplayer features. This includes the Co-Ops mode, designed for two to four players to tackle missions together, and the competitive Versus Ops mode for up to six participants. These online features will be available on all platforms, while local wireless play is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch and its successor.
For fans disappointed by the loss of MGS4’s multiplayer, Konami is implementing several enhancements to the core game. The port will benefit from improved internal resolution, a higher maximum framerate, and fully customizable controls. Peace Walker will also receive customizable controls, though it is unclear if it will get similar visual upgrades. The included Game Boy Color title, Ghost Babel, will not have its two-player Vs. Battle mode restored, but it will come with several quality-of-life features like screen filters and a rewind function.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on August 27, 2026, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch platforms. Pre-ordering grants bonus cosmetic items, including the Cardboard Camouflage for MGS4 and the Love Box uniform for Peace Walker. Players with save data from the first Master Collection will also unlock exclusive gold-themed cosmetics.
