Walking down the street and hearing fans shout “Lisan al-Gaib!” at him is a mix of pride and slight embarrassment for Timothée Chalamet, whose portrayal of Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two cemented his character’s transformation into a messianic leader. That now-viral line wouldn’t have become a cultural touchstone without one pivotal scene, Paul’s climactic speech, which Chalamet recently revisited just days after wrapping the next installment.

At a Los Angeles event hosted by Netflix, Chalamet and Adam Sandler shared career highlights, including that powerful monologue from the end of Dune: Part Two. Chalamet admitted, “That was a hell of a thing to memorize. You’re memorizing something in a made-up language, so I’m always very proud of that.” Director Denis Villeneuve had him learn the speech in English as well, blending fictional verses with ordinary spoken words. Reflecting on the sequence, Chalamet emphasized how meaningful it felt, especially having recently finished filming Dune: Part Three.

“I wrapped filming Part Three four days ago,” he shared. “It’s moving to me that something as out there as Dune, with its deep themes and almost psychedelic narrative, has taken on such personal resonance. Watching that speech now, I get emotional, I’ve grown up through these movies.”

Coming off more intimate projects like A Complete Unknown and this year’s Marty Supreme, Chalamet contrasted those experiences with the scale of the Dune franchise. “On a huge production like Dune, you might have two or three days where not much is asked of you, so I always circled that scene,” he explained. “I told myself, ‘This is my shot.’ I wanted to prove to Denis and to myself that I could own it, delivering a speech in a constructed language in front of hundreds of crew members. I remember calling a close friend that night and saying, ‘Man, that went fucking awesome.’ It’s hard to put into words how satisfying it felt.”

He also noted that the first Dune film didn’t offer Paul a true climactic moment, making the sequel’s speech feel like a years-long buildup. Now, hearing “Lisan al-Gaib!” shouted in public is a strange, humbling reminder of the character’s impact.

Chalamet’s latest film, Marty Supreme, arrives in theaters on Christmas Day. Then, next Christmas, Paul Atreides’ epic journey concludes with Dune: Part Three, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
