This collaboration integrates Haivision’s ultra-low-latency video transmission technology with Riedel’s Easy5G Private 5G solution, creating a comprehensive, single-provider offering for live broadcast and event production. The partnership, which includes Haivision products within Riedel’s Managed Technology services, promises to simplify complex workflows by providing end-to-end solutions encompassing planning, operation, and dedicated support.
The effectiveness of this combined technology was recently demonstrated in a high-profile live broadcast. Germany’s Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) utilized the integrated system for its coverage of the Cologne Carnival season opening. Two Riedel Easy5G base stations established robust coverage across the expansive Heumarkt square. For the broadcast, two of WDR’s ten cameras were fitted with Haivision’s 5G mobile video transmitters. One served as a stationary wireless camera focused on the audience, while another was a mobile unit used for live interviews and capturing dynamic stage action. The system flawlessly converted SDI signals to IP, transmitting them with exceptional stability and low latency over the private 5G network to Haivision StreamHub receivers located in the outside broadcast truck.
Jaqueline Voss, Director of Strategy and Innovations at Riedel Communications, emphasized the strategic value of the partnership. She noted that bundling Haivision’s proven real-time video systems with Riedel’s rental offerings and Easy5G technology creates powerful synergies. This one-stop-shop approach is designed to streamline production processes and significantly reduce operational complexity for clients.
Peter Maag, Haivision’s Chief Strategy Officer, highlighted the successful Cologne Carnival deployment as a perfect launchpad for the collaboration. He stated that working with WDR showcased the remarkable flexibility achieved by pairing Haivision’s mobile video encoders with Riedel’s private 5G infrastructure. The result was a wireless camera workflow that delivered both reliability and minimal delay, critical factors for live television.
Looking ahead, the partnership unlocks further potential for integrated production ecosystems. Voss pointed out that the Easy5G network’s capacity can support multiple applications simultaneously. In future productions, crew members could potentially access intercom functions through Virtual SmartPanels on their smartphones, all operating on the same private network that is carrying the high-bandwidth wireless video feeds. This convergence points toward more efficient and agile remote production models.
