Verizon Lite Internet Expands Coverage to Rural Areas

▼ Summary

– Verizon is launching a new “Lite” home internet plan with download speeds up to 25Mbps for $60/month, targeting areas previously without fiber or 5G coverage.
– Discounts include $15/month with a mobile plan, $10 for paperless billing and autopay, and an additional $10 off for three years if signed up by December 31st, reducing the price to $25/month.
– Verizon will throttle speeds after 150GB of data usage, and the service is available nationwide with potential expansion through acquisitions of Frontier and Starry.

A new Verizon Lite home internet plan is now available, specifically targeting households in rural and underserved locations where the company’s faster fiber and 5G services have not yet reached. This service provides download speeds reaching up to 25Mbps, designed for basic online activities. The standard monthly cost is set at $60, but significant discounts are available for existing Verizon mobile customers, which can substantially lower the final price.

Verizon positions the Lite plan as an ideal solution for light internet use, particularly for homes that have been dependent on older, less dependable technologies like DSL or satellite internet. The company emphasizes that postpaid mobile subscribers stand to gain the most from bundled savings. By combining this new internet service with a qualifying Verizon mobile plan, customers receive an automatic $15 monthly discount.

Further reductions are available through paperless billing and autopay, which shaves off another $10 each month. An additional promotional discount of $10 per month is also being offered for a period of three years to mobile customers who enroll before December 31st. When all these discounts are applied, the total monthly expense for the Verizon Lite internet can drop to as low as $25 per month.

While the discounted price is very competitive, the service’s speed is considerably slower than other budget-friendly internet alternatives currently on the market. For comparison, T-Mobile’s most affordable home internet plan offers potential download speeds up to 415Mbps for about $55 monthly. Data usage policies also differ significantly; Verizon will begin to throttle speeds to a maximum of 10Mbps after a customer uses 150GB of data in a single billing cycle. In contrast, T-Mobile’s threshold for potential slowdowns is much higher, at 1.2TB of data usage per month.

Mint Mobile has also entered the home internet space with a new prepaid plan. It similarly offers speeds up to 415Mbps but will start throttling data after 1TB of usage, with a monthly cost of up to $50. The Verizon Lite internet service is available nationwide starting immediately. This expansion is part of a broader strategy, as Verizon is poised to grow its home internet footprint further through planned acquisitions of fiber provider Frontier and fixed wireless access company Starry.
