A significant milestone in global telecommunications has been achieved with the Medusa Submarine Cable reaching its first Mediterranean landing point in Marseille. This development represents a crucial advancement for Libya’s digital infrastructure, driven by the Libyan International Telecommunications Company, a key subsidiary of the nation’s main postal and telecom authority. The ceremony in France celebrated not just a technical achievement but also Libya’s growing role in international connectivity and cooperation.

This initial phase of the ambitious project establishes a modern, high-capacity communications link between the southern and northern shores of the Mediterranean. Libya’s active involvement underscores a dedicated effort to upgrade its telecommunications framework and expand its connections with regional and global partners. The initiative is a clear signal of the country’s intent to modernize its digital economy and infrastructure.

Spanning an impressive 8,700 kilometers, the Medusa cable system will ultimately feature 19 separate landing points strategically located along the Mediterranean coastline, with extensions reaching into the Atlantic Ocean as far as Lisbon. It stands as one of the most extensive and forward-thinking projects aimed at enhancing digital links between Europe and North Africa, promising to reshape data flow across the region.

The project is central to Libya’s strategic vision of establishing itself as a regional digital hub, facilitating the efficient exchange of data between Europe and the African continent. Ibrahim Rehab, General Manager of the Libyan United International Company, a private sector participant, highlighted that this involvement will empower Libya to export advanced telecommunications services to other African nations. This move solidifies the country’s potential as a primary digital gateway into Africa.

Rehab further explained that the Medusa initiative directly supports Libya’s broader digital transformation goals. By diversifying the nation’s communications infrastructure, the project enhances both the security and the resilience of telecom services, making them more robust against potential disruptions.

The Medusa project was officially inaugurated in the city of Misrata in May 2025, following the initial contract signing that took place in Tripoli back in November 2023. When the entire system becomes fully operational, it is projected to provide exceptionally high-capacity, secure, and scalable connectivity. This will significantly strengthen Libya’s position in handling international data traffic and will accelerate economic and technological integration throughout the Mediterranean basin.
