The system enables advertisers to set up to five distinct experiment arms. Each arm contains a specific mix of campaigns, and individual campaigns can be included in multiple arms. Traffic is then intelligently split between these arms, with the flexibility to set custom splits as low as one percent. For a fair comparison, the platform normalizes the results based on the smallest traffic split used. The beta supports a wide range of campaign formats, including Search, Performance Max, Shopping, Demand Gen, Video, and App campaigns, though it currently excludes Hotels campaigns.
This framework unlocks the ability to test several critical strategic questions. Advertisers can experiment with optimal budget allocation across different campaign types and evaluate different account structures, such as comparing consolidated versus fragmented approaches. It also allows for testing bidding strategies, new targeting methods, and the adoption of various features. Advertisers have control over the analysis, choosing their preferred confidence interval, 95%, 80%, or 70%, and selecting the primary success metric, whether that’s Return on Ad Spend (ROAS), Cost Per Action (CPA), total conversions, or conversion value.
To ensure reliable data, Google recommends following several best practices. It’s advised to keep experiment arms as similar as possible, altering only one key variable at a time for clear attribution. Total budgets should be aligned across all arms, unless the experiment’s specific goal is to test different budget levels. Advertisers should avoid using shared budgets and refrain from making major changes to campaigns while the test is running. For results to reach statistical reliability, experiments should run for a minimum of six to eight weeks.
This launch signals a significant shift in Google’s approach to campaign measurement. It acknowledges that modern marketing performance is not about optimizing a single channel in isolation.
