Google to End Support for 1st and 2nd Gen Nest Thermostats in Oct 2025

Google has set an end date for its earliest smart thermostats. The tech giant has revealed that the first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats will no longer be supported starting October 2025, rendering most of their connected features non-functional. Although Google is offering some compensation to current users of these devices, European users will not receive a Google upgrade. Additionally, Google is discontinuing its sole European model with no plans for a new release in that region.

These North American thermostats, which are affected by this change, were released before Google acquired Nest in 2014. The original Nest Learning Thermostat was launched in 2011 to widespread acclaim, followed by its successor a year later. The second-generation European unit was introduced in 2014. Over the years, these devices have received consistent software updates and have adapted to various app redesigns. Nonetheless, the time has come for their support to conclude.

Google emphasizes that these products have enjoyed a lengthy lifespan and are not being completely deactivated. After October 25, 2025, these thermostats will cease to receive software updates and will lose connectivity to Google’s cloud services. Consequently, users will no longer be able to manage them through the Google Home app or via Assistant, which might be referred to as Gemini by then. However, the devices will still function as basic thermostats, allowing temperature control and scheduling directly from the unit’s screen.

For those who own one of these thermostats, Google will send out email notifications with special offers to ease the transition. In the US, owners can avail of a $130 discount on an upgrade to the fourth-generation Nest, which is priced at $280. In Canada, the discount available will be CA$160.
