Pebble’s Next Gadget: The Index 01 Smart Ring

▼ Summary

– The Pebble Index 01 is a $75 wearable ring with a microphone and button designed as a simple, reliable tool for audio capture and transcription.
– It records audio when its button is pressed, sending recordings and transcriptions to a companion app via Bluetooth, with local storage and transcription for offline use.
– The device is built for reliability with a physical button and a multi-year battery, intended to function as “external memory” without requiring frequent charging.
– While similar voice input is possible on Pebble smartwatches, the ring offers a dedicated, one-handed input method that the creator finds more convenient.
– The Index and its software are open-source, allowing for customization, and it is positioned as a bridge to other services rather than an AI agent.

Eric Migicovsky, the visionary behind Pebble’s return, has a new personal gadget obsession: a smart ring designed for the index finger. The Pebble Index 01 is a minimalist, $75 wearable focused on one core function: capturing audio. It features a microphone and a single activation button, resembling a sleek, high-tech cable tie. This device is the culmination of over a year of development, born from Migicovsky’s desire for a foolproof personal capture tool.

To record, you simply press and hold the ring’s button with your thumb. The audio is then sent via Bluetooth to the Pebble app on iOS or Android, where it appears as both a recording and a transcription. The ring includes about five minutes of local storage and an on-device transcription model, ensuring it functions even when disconnected from a phone. Reliability was the paramount design goal. Migicovsky calls it “external memory for your brain” and insists that if it weren’t completely dependable, he’d abandon it. The ring has no charger; its battery is designed to last for years with typical short, daily use, though marathon recording sessions would drain it.

The primary uses are intuitive: taking voice notes, setting reminders, and creating alarms. The system adds intelligence beyond simple recording. For instance, Migicovsky has his notes automatically sent to Notion. Reminders trigger notifications, and on Android, the app can set alarms directly. Paired with a Pebble watch for alerts, this creates a workflow that minimizes phone use. While newer Pebble watches offer similar voice features, the ring provides a dedicated, one-handed input method that feels distinct and immediate.

Future app development will focus on deeper integration, acting as a bridge to other services. The vision is for the app to intelligently handle requests, like creating calendar events or adding songs to playlists, based on the audio context. The broader concept aligns with a trend of AI-enabled wearables, but Migicovsky maintains a focused philosophy. He sees potential for AI integration, like sending recordings to ChatGPT, but emphasizes the product’s singular purpose: doing one job exceptionally well. However, he notes the system is “hackable.”

True to Pebble’s ethos, the entire Index platform will be open source. This allows for community-driven hardware modifications, app enhancements, or entirely new applications. For Migicovsky, it offers the perfect balance: building his ideal tool while empowering others to customize it.

The Pebble Index 01 is currently available for pre-order at $75. The price will increase to $99 when it begins shipping in March 2026. It comes in three colors and various sizes. Migicovsky, who uses his prototype dozens of times daily, believes many others will appreciate this seamless way to talk to their hand, as long as it never lets them down.
