Google has started integrating its advanced Gemini 3 model into select AI Mode search responses, marking a significant step forward in how complex queries are handled. This move follows the company’s announcement last week and is now active for certain users within Google Search.
Nick Fox, Google’s Senior Vice President of Knowledge and Information, recently shared on X that the rollout now includes intelligent automatic model routing to Gemini 3 Pro for particularly challenging questions in AI Mode. While an earlier post from Fox mentioned both AI Overviews and AI Mode, the update was later clarified to focus specifically on AI Mode.
Access to this enhanced capability is currently limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Users who have the feature will notice a selection option available in the carrot menu within the AI Mode tab.
Google had previously outlined these plans in a November 18 blog post by Liz Reid, Head of Search. She explained that automatic model selection in Search would soon be improved with Gemini 3, enabling the system to intelligently direct the most difficult AI Mode and AI Overview queries to this advanced model.
Gemini 3 itself was officially unveiled on November 18, 2025. At the launch, Google CEO Sundar Pichai described it as the company’s most intelligent model to date, integrating all of Gemini’s capabilities to help bring any idea to life.
For marketers and regular users, the practical impact could be noticeable. Subscribers in the U.S. might observe richer, more detailed, and visually enhanced results when using AI Mode. These improvements are likely driven by the underlying Gemini 3 technology.
Looking ahead, Google intends for all AI-generated search responses to eventually rely on Gemini 3. This transition will continue until the next major model upgrade is developed and deployed across the Search platform.
