According to the company, Teammates represents more than theoretical discussion, it’s a functional prototype that integrates advanced AI to support players dynamically. The announcement follows recent comments from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who described generative AI as a “revolution” for the industry, comparable to the leap from 2D to 3D graphics.
Described as a “playable research project,” Teammates places players in the role of a resistance fighter navigating a dystopian enemy base. The objective is to locate five missing squad members while recovering their final memories and battling hostile forces. Alongside an AI voice assistant named Jaspar, players are supported by two NPC squadmates, Pablo and Sofia, both powered by sophisticated new systems.
Jaspar serves as an interactive guide, capable of highlighting threats or objects, offering story context, adjusting game settings instantly, and pausing gameplay, all through natural voice commands. More than a utility, Jaspar acts as a dynamic character, interpreting environmental cues and player input to adapt in real time.
Players can also communicate directly with Pablo and Sofia, issuing commands or engaging in dialogue. Early testing revealed that participants formed quick connections with these AI-driven characters. Xavier Manzanares, Director of Gameplay GenAI, noted that Jaspar proved especially helpful in guiding players, accessing menus, and deepening narrative immersion, a feature with potential applications across various game genres.
Rémi Labory, Data & AI Director, emphasized the personalization made possible by this technology. “Player input shapes character reactions in real time, something traditional development can’t achieve,” he explained. The project also includes a complete player journey from onboarding to debrief, marking an industry first.
Ubisoft acknowledges ongoing debates about AI’s role in game development but stresses that the goal is enhancement, not replacement. Narrative Director Virginie Mosser shared that, rather than removing human creativity, the system allows writers to establish boundaries within which NPCs can improvise, preserving lore and character motivations while enabling spontaneous interaction.
So far, Teammates has undergone closed testing with several hundred players. Ubisoft plans to continue refining the system based on feedback from both players and internal creative teams, prioritizing human ingenuity throughout development.
