Google is now bringing its advanced Gemini AI assistant directly to Android Auto, expanding the capabilities of in-car infotainment systems for millions of drivers. This integration allows users to move beyond basic voice commands, enabling more natural conversations and smarter assistance while on the road. The rollout targets Android phone users who have upgraded from the older Google Assistant, making the feature available on a wide range of compatible smartphones.

The company confirmed on November 20 that Android Auto, which is already present in over 250 million vehicles globally, will now support Gemini. This update is being delivered to users with eligible Android-based devices, including Google Pixel smartphones, select Samsung Galaxy models, and newer foldable phones like the ZFold 7 and ZFlip 7. This expansion represents a significant step in embedding advanced AI directly into the driving experience.

Originally introduced as Bard in 2023 before being rebranded to Gemini this year, the AI assistant is designed with conversational abilities that are particularly useful in a car. Instead of requiring a specific address for navigation, drivers can ask for directions to general categories of places, such as “the nearest charging station” or “a good Italian restaurant.” It also enhances communication by helping to compose and send personalized messages, moving beyond simple pre-set replies.

Gemini’s integration extends to managing several productivity and planning applications directly from the driver’s seat. Supported services now include Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Tasks, alongside Samsung’s own Calendar, Reminder, and Notes apps. Google has indicated that support for additional third-party applications will be introduced in future updates, further broadening the system’s utility.

This technology is not limited to aftermarket systems. Google is also progressively replacing the legacy Google Assistant with Gemini in vehicles equipped with Google Built-In. Volvo was the first automaker announced to receive this upgrade, with plans to ship its 2026 models featuring a new version of the Google Automotive OS-based infotainment system. Similarly, Polestar, the electric vehicle brand partially owned by Volvo, has confirmed it will integrate Gemini into its 2026 vehicles via an upcoming software update.

The adoption of Gemini is gaining momentum across the automotive industry. Last month, General Motors revealed its intention to incorporate the AI into its vehicles starting in 2025. This will apply to GM models using Android Automotive-based infotainment systems, including new electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Notably, GM also stated that it is developing its own proprietary AI software for implementation in its future vehicle lineups.
