The Gemini AI assistant is now making its debut on the Google TV Streamer, expanding its reach after initially launching on a limited set of devices last September. This new feature completely replaces Google Assistant, offering a more fluid and conversational way to find something to watch. Instead of simple commands, you can ask complex questions and receive detailed answers displayed across the entire screen.
Imagine posing questions like, “I enjoy dramas but my partner prefers comedies. Can you suggest a movie we’d both like?” or “Can you remind me how the last season of ‘Outlander’ ended?” The system is designed to understand context and provide tailored recommendations, such as identifying “the new hospital drama that’s generating a lot of buzz” or finding “movies similar to Mission Impossible but with more humor.”
Gemini’s functionality isn’t limited to entertainment. It also serves as an educational tool and a practical guide for everyday tasks. You can ask it to “explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader,” and it will deliver a child-friendly explanation. For hands-on activities, it can walk you through DIY projects or cooking recipes, often pulling in relevant YouTube videos to illustrate the steps.
Controlling your smart home is another key capability. A simple voice command like “Show me the backyard camera” will bring up the live feed directly on your television. Users can personalize their experience by selecting from a range of more expressive and natural-sounding voices for the assistant. Each response from Gemini includes thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons, allowing for immediate feedback, and you can also verbally instruct it to “Send feedback” to help improve the service.
Activating Gemini is straightforward. Just press the microphone button on your Google TV Streamer remote. Once the update arrives on your device, you can enable and manage the assistant by navigating to Settings, then Accounts & Profile, selecting your account, and choosing Voice assistant to switch to Gemini for TV. These preferences can also be adjusted within the Google Home app for convenience.
The rollout for Gemini on the Google TV Streamer begins immediately and is expected to reach all users gradually over the coming weeks.
