Interestingly, Apple has faced considerable challenges with a similar AI-powered summarization tool, prompting Google to adopt a more measured approach. For its initial release, the feature will be exclusively available for chat applications and only on the Pixel 9 series and newer models, with the notable exception of the budget-friendly Pixel 9A.
The underlying technology for these summaries was first discovered in an Android 16 beta build back in August. According to early analysis, the system is currently restricted to chat apps and is designed to activate specifically for longer conversations. By focusing on extensive message threads, Google’s AI has more contextual data to work with, which should theoretically lead to more accurate and reliable summaries. This strategic limitation may help the company avoid the kind of high-profile errors that have plagued competing AI systems. Looking ahead, a subsequent update planned for December is expected to introduce automatic notification sorting, which will intelligently silence lower-priority alerts, another area where Apple is also deploying artificial intelligence.
In parallel with these summarization features, Google is broadening the reach of its security tools. The scam detection capability within messages, previously limited to Pixel devices, was expanded to more Android phones earlier this year. Now, owners of Pixel 6 and newer models will see this protective feature extend beyond Google’s own Messages app to include popular third-party platforms like Telegram and Discord. When a potentially fraudulent message is identified, the notification will be clearly tagged with a “likely scam” badge. Tapping on this alert brings up a system-generated pop-up warning, advising the user to proceed with caution. Furthermore, scam detection for phone calls is being rolled out to Pixel 9 owners in several countries, including the UK, Ireland, India, Australia, and Canada, though the Pixel 9A is again excluded from this upgrade.
Shifting focus to creative tools, Google is also integrating AI-powered photo editing directly into its Messages app. This “remix” feature allows users to apply generative AI effects to images without leaving their conversation. While this particular update is not confined to Pixel phones and will be available across the wider Android ecosystem, its availability is currently limited to English speakers in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and New Zealand. Additionally, to help users stay connected with important contacts, Pixel 6 and newer devices will now prioritize chat notifications from designated Messages VIPs, ensuring that crucial conversations are never missed.
