Pinterest has rolled out new user controls that allow people to limit the amount of AI-generated content appearing in their feeds. This move responds directly to growing user frustration over an influx of synthetic imagery, often referred to as “AI slop,” which many feel has degraded the platform’s experience. Users can now adjust their settings to see less generative AI content in specific categories, and Pinterest is also making its existing AI content labels more prominent.
The platform, known for inspiration and product discovery, has faced mounting criticism as AI-generated pins have surged. Media outlets and users alike have questioned whether the site’s unique appeal is being compromised. Left unchecked, this issue could significantly damage Pinterest’s reputation and its financial performance.
Tackling the problem is increasingly difficult as AI content becomes more widespread and sophisticated. According to Pinterest, academic research indicates that generative AI now accounts for 57% of all online material, making it harder for users to distinguish what’s authentic.
Earlier this year, Pinterest introduced “AI modified” labels for images flagged either by metadata or internal detection systems. At that time, the company promised user-facing tools to reduce AI content visibility, and those features are now available. Located under “Refine your recommendations” in the Settings menu, the controls let individuals choose to see less AI-generated imagery in categories such as beauty, art, fashion, and home décor. Pinterest plans to expand these categories based on user input, and settings can be changed at any time.
Additionally, while browsing, users can provide direct feedback on AI imagery. If a Pin appears unappealing because it’s AI-generated, selecting the three-dot menu offers options to refine preferences. These new controls are launching first on the web and Android, with an iOS release scheduled in the coming weeks.
Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer at Pinterest, emphasized the company’s commitment to its community. He stated that the new GenAI controls empower users to personalize their experience, balancing human creativity with AI innovation and ensuring every feed reflects individual inspiration.
