OpenAI is rolling out powerful new tools that enable users to build and interact with applications directly within ChatGPT. This integration allows the chatbot to function as a central hub where you can summon third-party apps to assist with specific tasks, all while ChatGPT provides relevant context and guidance throughout the process.

During a recent live demonstration, an OpenAI representative illustrated how the system operates. The employee initiated a ChatGPT session and requested that the Canva app design a promotional poster for a new dog-walking service. After a brief pause, Canva presented several design options. The presenter then asked for a complete pitch deck to be generated based on the selected poster. In another example, the employee used Zillow through ChatGPT to search for available homes in Pittsburgh, resulting in an interactive Zillow map appearing within the chat. The employee proceeded to ask follow-up questions about the displayed properties.

A selection of applications is now accessible inside ChatGPT, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. OpenAI has announced that additional apps, such as DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber, will be incorporated in the coming weeks. This expansion builds on recent functionality, like the ability for users to complete purchases on Etsy via the chatbot, signaling a broader initiative to deeply integrate ChatGPT with various web services.

Starting immediately, developers can access a preview version of the software development kit (SDK) for creating compatible applications. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that later this year, developers will gain the ability to submit their apps for an official review and publication process. The company also intends to launch a dedicated directory where users can easily discover and browse available apps. According to Altman, OpenAI will release detailed guidance regarding app monetization strategies in the near future.
