Following the impressive performance of OpenAI’s video editing application Sora, which currently leads the U.S. App Store rankings, Google appears ready to introduce a significant visual overhaul for its own Gemini AI app. The planned redesign would transform the app from a conventional chatbot interface into a dynamic, scrollable feed filled with suggested prompts and vibrant images. This shift aims to make the user experience more intuitive and visually stimulating.
Insights into the upcoming changes emerged from a recent version of the Gemini Android app, uncovered by the news outlet Android Authority. The new interface is not yet available to the general public. A reverse engineer managed to activate the experimental home screen by examining the app’s underlying code. On this new screen, shortcut buttons for functions like “Create Image” and “Deep Research” were repositioned higher up, followed directly by the scrollable prompt feed.
When asked for a statement, a Google representative indicated that the company has no official announcement to share at this time.
The examples of suggested prompts displayed in the feed encourage creative interactions, such as “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” and “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Other prompts, set against colorful backgrounds, proposed various ways to engage with Gemini, including ideas like “Brainstorm out loud with Live” and “Send me a daily news roundup.”
The core objective is to actively inspire users by presenting specific, imaginative ways to utilize Gemini’s AI capabilities, moving beyond the traditional empty text box that requires users to independently discover what the AI can do. This visual refresh is also designed to make the application more attractive and engaging for everyday use.
Should this redesign be released to all users, it could strengthen Google’s position against competitors like OpenAI. The ChatGPT app maintains a fairly minimalist design, typically presenting users with a mostly blank screen upon launch. Furthermore, the redesign could help Google leverage consumer interest in its newer AI image model, Nano Banana. This model contributed significantly to the Gemini app’s rise to the number one spot on the App Store’s Top Charts on September 12, a position it held until being overtaken by Sora.
