In a strategic push to modernize its tourism industry, Qatar is empowering local businesses through targeted digital workshops. A recent session, organized jointly by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Qatar Tourism, equipped small and medium-sized enterprises in the hospitality and travel sectors with crucial knowledge on adopting advanced technologies. This initiative forms a core component of the national SMEs Go Digital Program, designed specifically to accelerate the integration of digital tools and artificial intelligence across vital economic areas.
The workshop provided a practical look at how artificial intelligence can revolutionize customer experiences and optimize day-to-day operations for hotels and tour operators. Attendees examined real-world applications of emerging technologies, learning how to implement them to meet the unique demands of the tourism market. The focus was on actionable strategies that can lead to new avenues for growth and improved service delivery.
Faraj Jassim Abdulla, who leads the Digital Economy Department at MCIT, described the program as a fundamental element of Qatar’s plan to establish a resilient, technology-driven economy. He pointed out that the support extends beyond just technical advice. Participants receive a comprehensive package that includes digital readiness evaluations, customized transformation plans, and direct connections to specialized service providers. This holistic approach is intended to give SMEs the confidence and resources needed to innovate and compete more effectively, both within Qatar and internationally.
Echoing this sentiment, Omar al-Jaber, Chief of Tourism Development at Qatar Tourism, highlighted that embedding AI into their own platforms is a priority for elevating service standards. He urged all industry partners to embrace digital solutions, emphasizing that such adoption is essential for establishing Qatar’s reputation as a premier global destination.
This workshop is one of many being conducted under the broader SMEs Digital Transformation Program, which also focuses on other critical sectors including education, healthcare, retail, and logistics. The program’s objectives are closely aligned with the national Digital Agenda 2030, which seeks to cultivate a business environment fueled by digital innovation. To ensure participants can act on what they learn, the program offers specialized training, customized technology proposals, and the possibility of financial assistance through the Qatar Development Bank.
By taking these concerted steps, Qatar is working to make digital innovation a central pillar of its tourism economy. The ultimate goal is to enable small and medium enterprises to become powerful engines for national economic growth and enhanced international competitiveness.
