When users search for phrases like “does trump show signs of dementia,” the platform no longer provides its typical AI-generated summary. Instead, it displays a message stating, “An AI Overview is not available for this search.” This limitation also applies when using Google’s dedicated AI Mode, where only a standard list of ten web links appears without any synthesized information.
This selective blocking appears unique to searches involving Trump and related terms like dementia, Alzheimer’s, and senility. Interestingly, the same restrictions do not uniformly apply to similar inquiries about other political figures. For instance, searching “does biden show signs of dementia” in regular search mode yields no AI Overview, but switching to AI Mode does generate a summarized response. That response typically begins by noting the impossibility of making a definitive diagnosis based solely on public information.
Queries regarding President Biden and Alzheimer’s also produce AI overviews, which state clearly that there exists “no clinical diagnosis or public proof” linking him to the disease. The contrast becomes even more apparent when substituting the names of other former presidents. A search for Barack Obama and dementia, for example, readily generates an AI summary indicating no public evidence or medical professional statements suggest he has the condition.
Given that both Trump and Biden are the oldest individuals to have served as U.S. president, public curiosity about their cognitive health is considerable. Google’s decision to limit AI responses on this sensitive topic may stem from concerns over accuracy, since AI summaries can sometimes present incorrect or misleading details. The company might also be cautious about potential backlash, especially in light of its recent $24.5 million settlement regarding the suspension of Trump’s YouTube account.
When questioned about the absence of AI overviews for these searches, a Google representative declined to specify the reasons. The spokesperson reiterated the company’s general policy that AI Overviews and AI Mode will not generate a response for every query, without addressing the apparent inconsistency in treatment between different public figures.
