Only 17% of businesses currently use technology capable of blocking or scanning uploads to public AI tools, leaving the vast majority reliant on training, policy documents, or informal guidelines to prevent data leaks. Some firms have no protective measures in place whatsoever. Employees frequently input customer records, internal financial data, and even login credentials into AI chatbots and copilots, often from personal or unmonitored devices. Once this information enters an external AI system, it becomes irretrievable and may persist in training datasets for years, creating unforeseen privacy and security liabilities.
This vulnerability is worsened by a dangerous level of overconfidence among leadership. Roughly one-third of executives operate under the false belief that their organization comprehensively tracks all AI-related activity. In reality, a mere 9% have functional governance systems in place. This disconnect between perceived and actual oversight means companies remain largely unaware of how much sensitive information their staff members are sharing outside the company.
Regulatory bodies across the globe are accelerating AI oversight, with U.S. agencies alone issuing 59 new AI-related regulations in 2024, more than double the previous year’s total. Despite this rapid legal evolution, only 12% of companies rank compliance breaches as a leading AI concern. The practical risks, however, are substantial and ongoing. In effect, most organizations cannot provide clear answers to fundamental questions: Which AI systems are storing customer data? How can that data be erased if requested by regulators? Without clear visibility into employee interactions with AI, every query or upload represents a potential compliance failure.
For Chief Information Security Officers, these findings highlight two critical areas of focus. The first is implementing technical controls, specifically, blocking the upload of sensitive data and scanning content before it reaches external AI platforms. While employee training remains valuable, it is not sufficient on its own. The second priority involves compliance readiness. Regulators are already imposing penalties for poor AI governance, and CISOs must demonstrate that their organizations can effectively monitor and manage how data enters AI environments.
As one industry expert noted, whether an organization operates in Europe, the Middle East, or APAC, the core issue remains consistent: companies cannot protect what they cannot see.
