The landscape of AI chatbots is shifting rapidly, with Microsoft Copilot emerging as the fastest-growing platform in recent months according to fresh analytics data. While ChatGPT continues to dominate in total user numbers, Copilot’s explosive growth rate of 175% between March and June far outpaces competitors, signaling a dynamic shift in user adoption patterns across desktop and mobile environments.
Between March and June, overall engagement with AI tools climbed by 5.3% on mobile devices, reaching 73.4 million users. Desktop usage saw a slight decline of 11% during the same period, though it still maintains a higher absolute user base of 78.4 million people. Among the major players, ChatGPT led with 36.1 million desktop and 25.3 million mobile users, followed by Copilot with 23.1 million on desktop and 8.8 million on mobile. Google Gemini attracted 14.2 million mobile users during this period.
What sets these platforms apart isn’t just raw numbers, it’s user behavior. More than 85% of mobile ChatGPT users demonstrate strong loyalty, rarely switching to other AI services. In contrast, Gemini and Copilot users show more willingness to explore alternative tools, reflecting a trial-oriented or multi-tool approach rather than deep platform commitment.
Smriti Sharma, SVP of Custom IQ at Comscore, notes that Copilot’s mobile growth stems largely from Microsoft’s ecosystem integration and its focus on productivity-oriented tasks. “Microsoft’s mobile-first strategy aligns well with lightweight productivity needs,” Sharma observed. She also highlighted that ChatGPT, as an early market entrant, has already captured a massive audience, resulting in steadier growth compared to newer tools like Gemini and Copilot which are still in accelerated adoption phases.
Beyond the big three, other AI tools are also gaining traction. Canva’s AI design assistant attracted 15.1 million desktop and 7.6 million mobile users, while Grammarly secured 5.4 million desktop users. Octane AI, a marketing platform, reached 8.3 million mobile users, and voice modulation tool Voicemod was used by 4.7 million people on desktop.
Comscore’s latest AI tracking initiative, launched in May, monitors 117 different AI tools across nine categories on both PC and mobile platforms. The data reveals not only growth but a fundamental transformation in how people interact with artificial intelligence. Sharma emphasized, “AI isn’t just expanding, it’s exploding. Consumers are rapidly integrating these tools into daily life, with leading platforms like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini driving much of that momentum through remarkable mobile engagement.”
