Snapchat has introduced a new feature that allows users to generate and modify images using simple text commands. This innovative tool, called the Imagine Lens, is currently available exclusively to Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers. By typing descriptive prompts, members can produce original visuals, alter existing snaps, or experiment with creative transformations.
With the Imagine Lens, individuals can input their own unique instructions, such as “show me a grumpy cat wearing a top hat” or “transform my selfie into a sci-fi character”, and then share the resulting images directly with friends, add them to their Story, or export them beyond the platform. While Snapchat already offers various AI-powered lenses, this marks the first open prompt image-generation Lens in its lineup, giving users greater creative control.
In addition to custom text entries, the lens provides several pre-loaded prompt options. These include turning a photo into a multi-panel comic strip, generating a humorous caricature, or placing a person in an adventurous scenario like skydiving. Users can always tap the caption bar to refine or completely change their prompt until they achieve the desired result.
Earlier this year, Snap unveiled a mobile-optimized AI model for text-to-image generation, hinting that it would soon enhance Snapchat’s capabilities. Although the company hasn’t confirmed whether this specific model powers the new lens, it emphasized that its lenses combine proprietary technology with industry-leading AI systems.
Subscribers can access the Imagine Lens at the front of the Lens Carousel or within the Exclusive category. After selecting it, they simply tap the caption area to enter or modify a prompt. A Platinum subscription runs $15.99 per month, while Lens+ is available for $8.99 monthly.
Snap has long been recognized as a pioneer in augmented reality, but it has also made significant investments in artificial intelligence in recent years. Several months ago, the company released a standalone Lens Studio app and web tool to simplify AR lens creation using AI. This was followed in March by the rollout of its first generative AI lenses for video, further expanding its creative toolkit.
