Three concerned parents, Reni Cao, Xiao Zhang, and Susan Rosenthal, decided to tackle excessive screen time by creating a tool that promotes active engagement. Leaving behind careers in technology, they developed Dex, a gadget that recently attracted $4.8 million in funding from investors impressed by its unique approach.

Resembling a high-tech magnifying glass, Dex features a camera on one end and a touchscreen on the other. Children simply point it at objects, and the built-in artificial intelligence identifies the item, displaying and pronouncing its name in the language of their choice. Beyond simple translation, the device includes interactive story lessons and educational games, setting it apart from app-only options like Duolingo Kids.

“Our goal is to deliver authentic language learning through real-world interaction,” Cao explained in an interview. “Kids aren’t just passively listening, they’re thinking, creating, and exploring. They learn by doing, which makes the experience far more meaningful.”

Aimed at children between three and eight years old, Dex currently supports eight major languages: Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. It also accommodates 34 regional dialects, including Egyptian Arabic and Mexican Spanish, offering nuanced linguistic exposure.
