Google Gemini Now Remembers Your Past Chats for Personalization

▼ Summary

Google is updating the Gemini app to personalize responses using past conversations and introducing new privacy controls, including Temporary Chat mode.
– The personalization feature allows Gemini to recall details from earlier chats, making interactions feel more contextual and collaborative.
– Temporary Chat mode enables users to have conversations that don’t influence future responses, with chats kept for up to 72 hours and not used for personalization or training.
Privacy controls are being updated, including renaming “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity,” which allows optional data usage for improving services.
– The updates are rolling out gradually, starting today in select countries for Gemini 2.5 Pro, with expansion to more regions and versions like 2.5 Flash in the coming weeks.

Google Gemini is getting smarter by remembering your past conversations, offering more personalized responses while introducing new privacy features like Temporary Chat mode. These updates, rolling out gradually starting today, aim to make interactions feel more natural while giving users greater control over their data.

The enhanced personalization feature allows Gemini to reference previous chats, creating a seamless experience where the assistant recalls details and preferences without requiring constant repetition. This functionality mirrors human conversation, where context carries over naturally between discussions. Enabled by default, users can toggle it off anytime through Settings → Personal context → Your past chats with Gemini.

For those who prefer conversations without long-term influence, Temporary Chat provides a privacy-focused alternative. Designed for sensitive topics or one-off discussions, these chats won’t appear in recent history, won’t shape future responses, and automatically delete within 72 hours. Google emphasizes this is ideal for quick queries or confidential brainstorming sessions where cross-pollination of context could be problematic.

Privacy controls are also receiving updates, with the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting rebranded as “Keep Activity.” When enabled, it allows limited use of uploaded files or photos to refine Google’s services. Users retain full control, existing preferences stay unchanged unless manually adjusted, and Temporary Chat remains unaffected.

The practical benefits are clear: Personalized interactions reduce redundant explanations, while Temporary Chat ensures sensitive work remains compartmentalized. Businesses handling multiple clients, for instance, can avoid overlapping preferences by isolating discussions. Both features align with modern privacy expectations, offering flexibility for professional and personal use.

Initially launching for Gemini 2.5 Pro in select markets, the update will expand to 2.5 Flash and additional regions soon. With these improvements, Google continues refining its AI assistant to balance customization with user discretion.
