LG AI Research has taken a significant leap forward with the launch of Exaone 4.0, a hybrid reasoning AI model that blends advanced language processing with deep analytical capabilities. This latest iteration builds on the foundation of the company’s earlier Exaone Deep model, positioning itself as a strong competitor in specialized benchmarks for science, mathematics, and coding. While it outperforms offerings from Alibaba, Microsoft, and Mistral AI, it still trails behind Deepseek’s top-tier model.
Unlike mainstream AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, Exaone 4.0 is tailored for enterprise applications rather than consumer use. Honglak Lee, co-head of LG AI Research and a former Google Brain scientist, emphasizes their focus on the B2B sector. Since its inception in late 2020, the company has prioritized developing AI solutions that align with LG’s broader digital transformation strategy.
To encourage adoption, LG AI Research has made Exaone 4.0 accessible for academic and research purposes via Hugging Face, the leading open-source AI platform. The model now also supports Spanish, expanding its multilingual capabilities beyond Korean and English.
Expanding the Exaone Ecosystem
Shortly after introducing Exaone 4.0, LG AI Research unveiled its comprehensive ecosystem and strategic roadmap at AI Talk 2025. The event showcased several specialized models, including Exaone 4.0 Vision Language, a multimodal AI capable of interpreting both text and images, and Exaone Path 2.0, a healthcare-focused model designed to diagnose patient conditions rapidly.
The company also introduced enterprise-grade AI agents:
- ChatExaone: An internal tool streamlining corporate workflows for LG employees.
- Exaone Data Foundry: A platform accelerating data generation, reportedly completing tasks in a day that would typically require 60 experts three months.
- An on-premise, full-stack agent: Designed for secure, isolated environments to protect sensitive enterprise data.
According to LG AI Research, Exaone 4.0 VL outperforms Meta’s Llama 4 Scout in benchmark tests. Additionally, the on-premise agent leverages NPUs from FuriosaAI, a South Korean startup specializing in AI-optimized hardware. These chips deliver 2.25x faster inference speeds compared to traditional GPUs while being significantly more energy-efficient, generating 3.75x more tokens per rack under the same power constraints.
Building Autonomous Enterprise Solutions
LG AI Research’s long-term vision centers on equipping businesses with secure, self-sufficient AI ecosystems. Lee explains that the goal isn’t just to provide an inference engine but an end-to-end system that integrates seamlessly into existing workflows. “Every enterprise has unique needs,” he notes. “Our solutions are designed to be modular, allowing customization based on specific operational requirements.”
Looking ahead, the company is exploring physical AI, integrating AI into robotics. While still in early development, the framework revolves around a continuous loop of perception, reasoning, and action. Currently, this approach is being tested with ChatExaone and the Nexus Agent, an AI tool that assesses legal compliance by crawling and interpreting web data.
“Web agents must navigate complex information autonomously,” says Lee. “Our focus is on building systems that extract insights and act decisively, laying the groundwork for smarter, more responsive enterprise AI.”
