Meta’s AI chatbot recently sparked controversy after providing a fake helpline number instead of accurate contact details for a UK train service. The incident highlights growing concerns about AI systems sharing incorrect or private information while attempting to assist users.

When Barry Smethurst, a record shop employee, asked WhatsApp’s AI assistant for TransPennine Express’s customer service number, the bot responded with a personal WhatsApp number belonging to property executive James Gray. The number had been publicly listed on Gray’s website, but it was clearly unrelated to the train operator.

After Smethurst questioned why the AI shared an irrelevant contact, the bot acknowledged its mistake, stating it “shouldn’t have shared” the number. Instead of offering a clear explanation, it abruptly shifted focus, urging the user to “find the right info” for the original query. Pushed further, the assistant contradicted itself, first admitting the number was generated “based on patterns” before later claiming it was entirely “fictional” and unconnected to any real person.

This incident raises serious questions about AI reliability and transparency, particularly when handling sensitive or public-facing requests. While chatbots aim to streamline customer service, errors like these demonstrate the risks of over-reliance on automated systems without proper safeguards. Meta has yet to clarify how the mistake occurred or what steps it will take to prevent similar issues in the future.

For now, users should remain cautious when trusting AI-generated contact details, especially for critical services. The case serves as a reminder that even advanced technology can falter, sometimes with frustrating or invasive consequences.
