The landscape of digital content consumption is undergoing a significant shift, driven by the widespread adoption of Google’s AI Overviews. New analysis reveals that while these automated summaries are reducing traditional search clicks, publishers are finding substantial growth in other areas, particularly real-time news and Google Discover. This evolution presents both challenges and clear opportunities for content creators.

According to a comprehensive study by Define Media Group, which examined Google Search Console data across 64 websites, organic search clicks have plummeted by 42% since AI Overviews began their major expansion. This steep decline highlights a fundamental change in how users find information, moving away from manual link-clicking for answers that are now provided directly on the search results page.

The impact is not uniform across all content types. The data shows a stark contrast between evergreen, informational material and timely reporting. Traffic for breaking news stories across Google Search, Discover, and Google News surged by an impressive 103% from late 2024 into early 2026. Conversely, the losses were heavily concentrated in content designed to answer common, static questions. Before AI Overviews launched, organic search traffic averaged 1.7 billion clicks per quarter. Immediately after the feature’s introduction, traffic dropped by 16% and continued to fall, with declines accelerating in mid-2025 as the technology rolled out more broadly.

As traditional web search traffic waned, another channel emerged as a critical growth engine. Google Discover traffic increased by 30% across the portfolio studied, rising steadily to the point where it now drives roughly the same volume of traffic as standard web search. This platform, which surfaces content based on user interests rather than direct queries, has become the primary distributor for breaking news.

The reason for this divergence lies in how Google’s systems handle different types of searches. AI Overviews appear far less frequently for news-related queries. Data from Ahrefs cited in the report indicates they show up for only about 15% of news searches, which is nearly three times less often than for categories like health or science. Instead, searches for major, unfolding events, such as international conflicts or election results, typically trigger the Top Stories carousel, which links users directly to publisher articles.

Industry analysts suggest Google may be deliberately cautious with AI summaries for fast-moving news. The stakes for accuracy are exceptionally high, and the risk of generative AI systems presenting outdated or incorrect information, a phenomenon known as hallucination, is a significant concern during rapidly developing situations. This creates a protected space where traditional journalism and real-time reporting continue to thrive and attract substantial audience attention.
