A UK-based defense technology startup has secured significant early-stage investment to advance a novel artificial intelligence system designed for autonomous drone teams. Mutable Tactics successfully closed a €1.8 million pre-seed funding round to develop its core software platform. This technology aims to solve a critical challenge in modern military operations: maintaining effective drone functionality when communications with human operators are disrupted or entirely lost.
The core innovation lies in enabling collaborative decision-making among drones themselves. Instead of relying on constant, direct one-to-one commands from a human controller, the AI allows groups of aerial, maritime, or ground drones to work together as a coordinated team. They operate under a commander’s initial instructions and overarching intent, but can autonomously adapt and make tactical decisions in the field. This capability is vital for missions in GPS-denied environments or areas with unreliable communication links, allowing a single operator to manage an entire team rather than individual units.
The primary objective is to bridge a significant gap between advanced robotic systems and human operational capacity. By closing the decision layer between operator and machine, the software ensures drones can continue their missions effectively even without live input. This shift permits military personnel to concentrate on strategic goals and mission outcomes instead of being bogged down in manual, moment-to-moment control of each asset.
The investment round was spearheaded by space technology investor Seraphim Space. It also included participation from the UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF), alongside venture firms Koro, Entrepreneurs First, and Transpose. The newly acquired capital will be directed toward expanding Mutable Tactics’ engineering team and accelerating the development and testing of its flagship AI software.
The company was established earlier this year by co-founders Colin MacLeod, a former British Army officer, and Enrique Muñoz de Cote, a specialist in robotics AI. Their shared vision addresses the lag between the rapid pace of technological development in defense systems and the practical ability of humans to integrate and operate these systems in complex, real-world scenarios.
To validate its technology, Mutable Tactics is already engaged in collaborations with two European governments. These partnerships focus on integrating the software with unmanned systems from industry partners and conducting live demonstrations. The goal is to prove the system’s utility in supporting priority defense missions under authentic operational conditions.
