Google is now offering a significantly upgraded version of its AI image generator, Nano Banana 2, to all users at no cost. This move democratizes access to advanced visual creation tools that were once locked behind a subscription paywall. The new model, also identified as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, is designed to deliver high-speed intelligence for visual generation, enabling users to produce complex images more quickly and affordably than ever before. It is becoming available starting today within the Gemini app and across Google’s broader suite of AI platforms.

The core functionality of Nano Banana 2 mirrors its professional predecessor. It taps into real-time information, web search results, and Gemini’s extensive knowledge base to inform its creations. According to Google DeepMind product manager Naina Raisinghani, this access to current data makes the tool particularly adept at crafting detailed infographics or diagrams. The model also promises improved accuracy when rendering specific subjects, though concrete examples of this enhancement were not detailed in the announcement.

A major shift is the inclusion of premium features for free users. Capabilities like generating images with accurate, legible text and performing localized translations were previously exclusive to subscribers of Google’s AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra tiers. Now, these powerful tools are being extended to everyone using the free Gemini service and the AI Mode integrated into Google Search, significantly expanding creative possibilities for a wider audience.

Beyond accessibility, Nano Banana 2 introduces notable improvements in image quality and user control. Google highlights that the new model produces visuals with more vibrant lighting, richer textures, and sharper details. It is also better at following complex and specific user prompts. For creators working on multi-element scenes, the AI can more consistently maintain the appearance of up to five characters and 14 objects within a single workflow. Users are granted full control over aspect ratios and can select resolutions ranging from 512 pixels all the way up to 4K.

This update brings a change to the user interface within the Gemini app. The Nano Banana 2 model will now be the standard option across the Fast, Thinking, and Pro generation modes, replacing the previous Nano Banana Pro option. Subscribers to the AI Pro and Ultra plans will retain access to the older Pro model for specialized tasks by using a three-dot menu on images to regenerate them. The rollout of Nano Banana 2 is extensive, reaching AI Mode in Search, Google Lens, the Google app, and both mobile and desktop browsers. It also becomes the new default image generation model within Google’s AI video creation tool, Flow.
