In a significant move to strengthen its position in the competitive artificial intelligence market, Mistral AI has acquired the Paris-based startup Koyeb. This marks the first acquisition for the French AI firm, which is currently valued at $13.8 billion. The deal centers on Koyeb’s specialized platform that streamlines the deployment and management of AI applications at a large scale, handling the complex infrastructure that supports them.
While Mistral has built its reputation on developing advanced large language models, this acquisition signals a clear strategic shift. The company is actively expanding beyond pure research to become a comprehensive, full-stack AI provider. This ambition was previewed in June 2025 with the announcement of Mistral Compute, its own AI cloud infrastructure service. Integrating Koyeb’s technology and team is expected to significantly accelerate the development and capabilities of that offering.
Koyeb was founded in 2020 by three former employees of the French cloud company Scaleway. The startup’s core mission was to allow developers to build and process data applications without managing underlying servers, utilizing a serverless architecture. This approach has become increasingly critical as AI workloads grow more intensive. Koyeb also recently launched Sandboxes, which create secure, isolated environments specifically designed for deploying AI agents.
Prior to the acquisition, Koyeb’s platform already supported the deployment of models from Mistral and other AI providers. According to a company press release, the Koyeb platform will continue to operate. However, its team and technical expertise will now be dedicated to advancing Mistral’s objectives. This includes enhancing the deployment of models directly on client-owned hardware, optimizing GPU utilization, and scaling up AI inference, the crucial process of running a trained model to generate predictions or content.
The transaction involves Koyeb’s entire 13-person team, including its three co-founders, Yann Léger, Edouard Bonlieu, and Bastien Chatelard. They will join Mistral’s engineering division, reporting to Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Timothée Lacroix. Under this new structure, the Koyeb platform is anticipated to evolve into a fundamental element of the Mistral Compute infrastructure in the months ahead.
Lacroix emphasized the strategic value of the purchase, stating that Koyeb’s product and expertise will accelerate development on the Compute front and help build a true AI cloud. This acquisition is part of a broader cloud infrastructure push by Mistral. Only days before the deal was announced, the company revealed a massive $1.4 billion investment in data centers located in Sweden, responding to rising demand for alternatives to U.S.-dominated infrastructure.
Koyeb had secured $8.6 million in total funding. This included a $1.6 million pre-seed round in 2020 and a $7 million seed round led by the Paris venture capital firm Serena in 2023. Floriane de Maupeou, a principal at Serena, praised the acquisition. She noted that the merger will be instrumental in establishing the foundations for a sovereign AI infrastructure within Europe.
Bolstered by these geopolitical dynamics and its focus on delivering enterprise AI value, Mistral recently achieved a key financial milestone, surpassing $400 million in annual recurring revenue. Moving forward, Koyeb will also concentrate on serving enterprise clients, and its platform will no longer accept new registrations for its entry-level Starter tier.
Mistral has not revealed the financial details of the acquisition, and it remains unclear if further purchases are planned. However, in a recent address at the Techarena conference in Stockholm, CEO Arthur Mensch highlighted the company’s ongoing hiring efforts for infrastructure and other roles. He positioned Mistral to potential recruits as a European-headquartered organization committed to performing frontier AI research on the continent.
