Accessible through the Tools menu under the new Audio section, it joins the existing “Listen to this tab” function, offering a streamlined way to digest information without reading.
To use the feature, simply navigate to Tools > Audio and select “Listen to document summary.” This action launches an audio player equipped with a timeline scrubber and flexible playback speed controls, ranging from half speed to double speed. Users can also personalize the experience by selecting from various voice styles, such as a narrator, persuader, or coach, to suit their listening preference.
The summaries are generated by Google’s Gemini AI, which creates a brief spoken synopsis of the document’s contents, including information across multiple tabs if present. Designed for efficiency, these audio overviews are typically under a few minutes in length and employ a natural, conversational speaking style. This makes them ideal for scenarios like catching up on meeting notes at the last minute or extracting the key points from a lengthy report in just a short listening session.
The rollout of audio summaries is currently in progress and will be available over the coming weeks. Access is granted to specific Google Workspace subscription tiers. Eligible plans include Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus. Furthermore, subscribers to the Google AI Ultra for Business add-on, the Google AI Pro for Education add-on, and users of Google AI Pro and Ultra plans will also have access to this functionality.
