Exodus at xAI: Two More Co-Founders Depart After SpaceX Merger

▼ Summary
– Following the historic $1.25 trillion merger of xAI and SpaceX, several xAI employees and two co-founders have suddenly left the company.
– The departures of co-founders Yuhai (Tony) Wu and Jimmy Ba mean xAI now retains only half of its original 12 co-founders.
– Elon Musk has announced new, ambitious plans for the merged entity, including space-based AI data centers and vertical integration across multiple technologies.
– Musk stated the company was reorganized to improve execution speed, which required parting ways with some staff, and he publicly called for new applicants.
– The reorganized company will focus on four main application areas: Grok Main and Voice, Coding, Imagine (image/video), and Macrohard for digital emulation.
The recent merger between xAI and SpaceX, creating a combined entity valued at a staggering $1.25 trillion, has been followed by a significant wave of executive departures. Two more co-founders of the artificial intelligence firm have announced their exits, bringing the total number of original founders who have left to half. This organizational shakeup coincides with ambitious new strategic directions for the merged companies, including plans for space-based data centers and lunar operations.
Co-founder Yuhai (Tony) Wu declared his departure on social media, stating it was “time for [his] next chapter.” His announcement was quickly followed by a similar post from fellow co-founder Jimmy Ba, who wrote it was “time to recalibrate [his] gradient on the big picture.” These exits mean only six of xAI’s original twelve co-founders remain with the company. Some departing personnel have indicated they are launching their own AI ventures.
This personnel shift follows Elon Musk’s unveiling of a radically transformed vision for the future of the integrated xAI and SpaceX. The new roadmap involves developing “space-based AI” data centers and pursuing deep vertical integration across several futuristic domains. Musk has outlined a strategy encompassing artificial intelligence, rocket technology, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile communications, and the X platform, which he describes as a real-time information hub. Internally, he has reportedly discussed even more audacious goals, such as constructing an AI satellite factory and establishing a city on the moon.
Addressing the situation publicly, Musk posted that “xAI was reorganized a few days ago to improve speed of execution.” He acknowledged that this restructuring “unfortunately required parting ways with some people” and simultaneously issued a call for new talent to apply to the company. Musk also shared a recording of the internal 45-minute all-hands meeting where these sweeping changes were communicated to staff.
During that meeting, Musk explained the rationale behind the reorganization. “We’re organizing the company to be more effective at this scale,” he stated. The new structure will focus on four primary application divisions: Grok Main and Voice, Coding, Imagine (for image and video generation), and a division called Macrohard. Musk described Macrohard’s mission as aiming to achieve “full digital emulation of entire companies,” signaling a profound ambition for the technology’s enterprise applications.
