Google to Adopt Anthropic’s AI Model Integration Standard

▼ Summary
– Google plans to integrate Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its Gemini models and SDK, as announced by Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis.
– The integration timeline for MCP into Google’s systems has not been specified.
– MCP is becoming an open standard for linking AI models to various data systems, facilitating data retrieval and task execution.
– MCP allows developers to create two-way connections between data sources and AI-driven applications, such as chatbots.
– Several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have already incorporated MCP support into their platforms.
Hot on the heels of OpenAI’s decision to adopt Anthropic’s standard for linking AI models to data systems, Google has announced it will follow suit.
In a recent post on X, Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, revealed that Google plans to integrate Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its Gemini models and SDK. However, he did not provide a specific timeline for this integration.
“MCP is a good protocol and it’s rapidly becoming an open standard for the AI agentic era,” wrote Hassabis. “Look forward to developing it further with the MCP team and others in the industry.”
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) enables AI models to retrieve data from various sources, including business tools, software systems, content repositories, and app development environments, to execute tasks. It allows developers to create two-way connections between data sources and AI-driven applications, such as chatbots.
Through MCP, developers can expose data via “MCP servers” and create “MCP clients” — such as applications and workflows — that connect to these servers as needed. Since Anthropic made MCP open source, several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have incorporated support for the protocol into their platforms.
