Instagram Edits has made a significant impact in its first week on the market, surpassing the launch performance of its competitor, ByteDance’s CapCut. Meta’s new video creation app, designed to enhance Instagram reels, stories, and other social posts, recorded approximately 702,900 iOS downloads within its initial two days. This figure represents 37 times the number of downloads CapCut achieved on iOS during the same timeframe, according to Appfigures, an app intelligence provider.
By Thursday, Edits had amassed a total of 7.1 million downloads—1.2 million from iOS users and 5.9 million from Android users. In stark contrast, CapCut only garnered 83.5K downloads across both platforms within its first three days. Although CapCut was initially available in fewer markets, even doubling or tripling its numbers would still place it far behind Edits.
In the U.S. market, Edits saw 381,000 downloads within the first three days, compared to a mere 3,400 downloads for CapCut during its initial U.S. release, making Edits’ launch 112 times more successful stateside.
The rapid adoption of Edits propelled it to top charts, as noted by Appfigures. This high ranking can further enhance its download rate and intensify the competition. The app’s success underscores the strength of Meta’s ecosystem in promoting new applications.
Upon its debut on April 22, Instagram Edits secured the No. 1 spot on the U.S. iPhone App Store’s Top Overall apps and Top Apps (excluding games). Although it dropped to No. 2 by the second day and to No. 3 by Friday, it maintained a higher ranking than CapCut, which was positioned at No. 14 Overall and No. 10 among non-game apps after three days on the U.S. App Store.
Despite its strong start, Edits has a considerable journey ahead to match CapCut’s overall user base. Since its April 2020 launch, CapCut has amassed 1.22 billion downloads on iOS and Android worldwide, excluding China.
Feedback from creators has been mixed, as highlighted by social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman in her recent newsletter. While many users appreciate Edits for its user-friendly interface, built-in analytics, ad-free experience, 4K video support, and watermark-free exports, others criticize it for lacking features available in CapCut, such as templates and extensive transition effects.
With time, Edits has the potential to catch up with CapCut’s extensive feature set. It may also explore monetization strategies, such as introducing a paid tier or incorporating ads.
