Netflix Introduces Dialogue-Only Subtitles for Clearer Viewing

Netflix has introduced a new subtitle feature that displays only the spoken dialogue, omitting audio descriptions and speaker names previously included in the Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC). This update aims to enhance viewing clarity by focusing solely on the dialogue.
Currently available in English, this feature is initially being rolled out with recent Netflix originals, such as the fifth season of “You.” Netflix spokesperson Dorian Rosenburg mentioned that the company is actively looking into extending this option to older titles in the future.
Statistics indicate that almost half of all viewing hours in the United States involve the use of subtitles or captions. A CBS News survey revealed that 50 percent of viewers across the nation utilize these features. The reasons for this trend vary, including keeping the TV volume low or difficulty in understanding characters’ speech. Additionally, issues with audio compression for lower-quality TV and smartphone speakers contribute to the growing reliance on subtitles, as highlighted by The New York Times.
In conjunction with this new subtitle option, Netflix has also expanded its language selection for subtitles and dubbing, providing users with more flexibility in their viewing experience.
To access the new dialogue-only subtitles, navigate to Netflix’s language options while watching a supported title. Under the English tab, select the English option. The existing English (CC) option, which includes both dialogue and audio cues, remains available.
