Upgrade Your Shopify Checkout: Time to Migrate Google Tags

Shopify is revamping its checkout process, and if you use Google Ads or Analytics, you’ll need to act quickly.

Important Deadlines: Shopify Plus merchants must complete their migration by August 28, 2025. Non-Plus merchants have until August 26, 2026. Failing to meet these deadlines could lead to losing all conversion tracking on your Thank You and Order Status pages.

Solution: Leverage the Google & YouTube app. This app, created by Google specifically for Shopify, is now the primary tool for managing measurement, ads, and analytics.

Why Migrate Now?

  • Future-Proof: It’s designed to support Shopify’s evolving checkout system.
  • Enhanced Performance: Easily access advanced features like Enhanced Conversions and Customer Match.

Why It’s Important: Shopify is discontinuing older methods such as `checkout.liquid` and “additional scripts” for Google tag installation. If you don’t migrate, you risk losing critical conversion data, which is essential for optimizing ad performance and reporting.

Who Needs to Act: If your Google tags are in `checkout.liquid` (Shopify Plus), “Order status page additional scripts,” custom pixel setups, or the legacy Google Analytics setup in Online Store > Preferences, migration is necessary. It’s advisable to move all Google tags to the Google & YouTube app to prevent data loss and performance degradation.

Points of Caution: The Google Tag Manager isn’t supported by the app, so you’ll need to transfer tags out of GTM containers for full compatibility. While custom pixels may work, they aren’t reliable since Google doesn’t guarantee their performance. If your Analytics tags were not updated before February 2, Shopify converted them to custom pixels, potentially leading to inaccurate data.

Bottom Line: Shopify’s checkout changes are imminent. If you use Google Ads or Analytics, migrating your tags to the Google & YouTube app is crucial to maintaining accurate data.
