Liang Wenfeng is a Chinese entrepreneur and mathematician, born in 1985 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. He co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer and later founded DeepSeek, an artificial intelligence (AI) company. Liang’s academic journey led him to Zhejiang University, where he developed a keen interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning. In 2015, he co-founded High-Flyer, a quantitative hedge fund that has grown to manage approximately $8 billion in assets. In 2023, Liang established DeepSeek, focusing on developing open-source large language models (LLMs). The company gained international attention in January 2025 with the release of its AI assistant, which quickly became the most-downloaded free app on the U.S. iOS App Store. Liang’s approach emphasizes innovation and originality, challenging the Chinese tech industry to move beyond imitation. He advocates for open-source models, promoting collaboration and transparency in AI development. His contributions have been recognized at the highest levels of the Chinese government. In January 2025, he participated in a symposium hosted by Premier Li Qiang, highlighting his influence in China’s AI sector.
