Elon Musk, born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, is a globally recognized entrepreneur and backer known for his trailblazing work in technology and space exploration. Musk is the initiator, chair, CEO, and principal technology officer of SpaceX; CEO and inventor of Tesla, Inc.; and the owner, chair, and CTO of X Corp. He is also the initiator of The Boring Company and xAI; co-initiator of Neuralink and OpenAI; and president of the Musk Foundation. Musk’s odyssey commenced in South Africa, where he was born into the affluent Musk family. He migrated to Canada at age 18, gaining citizenship through his Canadian-born mother. His scholarly pursuits brought him to Queen’s University in Canada and subsequently to the University of Pennsylvania, where he attained bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. Musk’s enterprising nature led him to California in 1995 to enroll at Stanford University, but he abandoned his studies after only two days to pursue his business aspirations. Musk’s initial business enterprises encompass co-initiating Zip2, a metropolis guide software company, which was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999. That identical year, he co-established X.com, which subsequently evolved into PayPal and was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. Leveraging the earnings from these ventures, Musk established SpaceX, a spaceflight services company, in 2002. He became an early backer in Tesla Motors in 2004, adopting the position of CEO in 2008. In addition to his work with SpaceX and Tesla, Musk has been associated with diverse pioneering projects and companies. He assisted in establishing SolarCity, a solar-energy company acquired by Tesla and rebranded as Tesla Energy. He proposed the Hyperloop, a high-speed transportation system, and co-established OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company. Musk also co-established Neuralink, concentrating on developing brain-computer interfaces, and The Boring Company, which specializes in tunnel construction. In 2022, Musk procured Twitter for $44 billion and subsequently merged it into X Corp., rebranding the service as X. The subsequent year, he founded xAI, an artificial intelligence company. Musk is recognized for his ambitious visionary outlook, including the colonization of Mars and the progress of AI technology. His net worth, as of December 2023, was estimated to be around $232 billion, positioning him as the most affluent individual globally at that time.
