The ARPANET The ( A dvanced R esearch P rojects A gency Net work) was the first wide-area packet-switching network with distributed control and one of the first networks to implement the TCP/IP protocol suite. It was funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the United States Department of Defense and was initially designed for military and academic purposes. The ARPANET is considered to be the precursor of the Internet.
