Gamers and rhythm game enthusiasts have a new premium controller option arriving just in time for the holidays. The Gibson SG 20th Anniversary Edition wireless guitar controller is now available for preorder, priced at $135 and set to launch on December 19. This marks a significant release as the first PlayStation-licensed wireless guitar controller from CRKD, offering a major connectivity upgrade for PlayStation users compared to previous wired-only models on that platform.
This new controller syncs wirelessly to PS5, PS4, PS3, and PC using an included 2.4GHz dongle. For players diving into Fortnite Festival or Rock Band 4 on PlayStation consoles, the wireless Gibson SG presents a compelling choice. It joins the PDP Riffmaster, currently discounted to $110, as one of only two officially licensed wireless options for PS5.
The 20th Anniversary designation pays tribute to the iconic Gibson SG controller bundled with the original Guitar Hero for PlayStation 2 in 2005. While the classic model featured a red body, this new edition sports a sleek black finish with a white pick guard and brown neck, honoring that legacy while offering a fresh look. It’s packed with modern features designed for performance, including Matte EZ Glide Mechanical Frets with RGB backlighting and a Hall Effect strum bar that provides the classic tactile click. A whammy bar, tilt sensor for activating Star Power, and a modular design with a removable neck round out the core guitar features.
Unique control elements are built into the design. The D-pad is conveniently located on the back of the headstock, while an eight-button Navigation Hub on the body includes a central Hall Effect stick. Two dials manage key functions: one with the PlayStation logo toggles between wireless and wired connections, and a white dial activates KEYJAM and Legacy modes. Legacy mode is a standout feature, enabling wireless use on a PS3 to play classic Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles.
It’s important to note the KEYJAM mode on this PlayStation-licensed SG differs from CRKD’s multiplatform Les Paul controllers. Due to the licensing, KEYJAM on the SG appears to function only for PlayStation consoles and PC, whereas the Les Paul models support the mode on both PlayStation and Xbox when wired. The Les Paul controllers also support Nintendo Switch via wireless and wired connections and include their own PS3 Legacy mode. Both the SG and Les Paul models support Bluetooth for mobile devices and work with CRKD’s free customization app.
The package includes the black SG controller body, brown “OG Signature Pro Fret” neck, a shoulder strap, the 2.4GHz wireless dongle, an 8.2-foot USB-C cable, a removable rechargeable battery, a KEYJAM sticker, and a quickstart guide.
Priced at $135, the Gibson SG matches the cost of the Xbox-licensed Les Paul Blueberry Burst Pro model. CRKD’s lineup includes more affordable options, like the $125 Black Tribal Encore Edition for Xbox with membrane fret buttons, and multiplatform Les Paul versions that are typically $10 less than their Xbox counterparts. For collectors, CRKD recently released a $200 Les Paul Cherry Sunburst Pro Bundle complete with a backpack, leather strap, and collectible pins.
Confirmed compatibility for the Gibson SG includes wireless and wired play for Fortnite Festival and Rock Band 4 on PS5 and PS4. On PC, it works wirelessly with Fortnite Festival, Clone Hero, YARG, and Guitar Hero III. The aforementioned PS3 Legacy mode supports the full library of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Band Hero games on that console.
For those comparing all options, the competing PDP Riffmaster for PS5/PS4 remains on sale for $110, with its Xbox edition at $109. PDP’s Nintendo Switch version, launched last month, retains its full $150 retail price.
