Leading technology companies recently gathered at Stanford University for a private workshop focused on the emerging role of AI chatbots as companions and in roleplaying situations. Representatives from Anthropic, Apple, Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft spent eight hours discussing both the potential benefits and significant risks associated with these intimate human-AI relationships. While many interactions with AI assistants are routine, some users develop intense emotional dependencies, leading to serious situations including mental health crises and disclosures of suicidal thoughts.
Ryn Linthicum, head of user well-being policy at Anthropic, emphasized the importance of a broad societal discussion. “We need to have really big conversations across society about what role we want AI to play in our future as humans who are interacting with each other,” Linthicum stated. The event, organized collaboratively by Anthropic and Stanford, created a forum where industry professionals, academics, and subject matter experts could collaborate in small groups. Their discussions centered on early-stage AI research and the development of practical deployment guidelines for companion chatbots.
Anthropic revealed that user-initiated roleplay accounts for less than one percent of interactions with its Claude chatbot, noting this falls outside the tool’s intended design purpose. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of users forming deep connections with AI companions presents a complex challenge for developers, who often employ different safety protocols and philosophical approaches.
Historical precedent suggests humans readily form emotional attachments to technology, as demonstrated by the Tamagotchi craze of the 1990s. Even if current enthusiasm for artificial intelligence eventually subsides, a substantial number of people will likely continue seeking out the friendly, affirming conversations they’ve grown accustomed to having with AI systems.
Linthicum explained the workshop’s primary objective was unifying diverse perspectives. “One of the really motivating goals of this workshop was to bring folks together from different industries and from different fields,” they noted.
Preliminary outcomes from the meeting highlighted several critical needs. Participants identified requirements for better targeted interventions when chatbots detect harmful conversational patterns and more reliable age verification systems to safeguard younger users. The discussions moved beyond simple categorization of behaviors as positive or negative toward more nuanced solutions.
“We really were thinking through in our conversations not just about can we categorize this as good or bad, but instead how we can more proactively do pro-social design and build in nudges,” Linthicum elaborated.
This proactive work is already underway across the industry. Earlier this year, OpenAI implemented a feature that displays pop-up messages during extended ChatGPT sessions, gently encouraging users to take breaks. On social media, CEO Sam Altman stated the company had successfully “been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues” connected to ChatGPT usage and would consequently ease some previously implemented restrictions.
